Selling into Australia from New Zealand
The closest market and the most confused one, because NZ GST and Australian GST look identical and are completely separate. A NZ company needs its own Australian registration once the threshold may be reached, and cannot claim Australian GST through its NZ return.
What is different from here
| Tax treaty | Yes. Business profits are taxable in Australia only through a permanent establishment. |
|---|---|
| Trade agreement | ANZCERTA: NZ-origin goods enter Australia duty-free. |
| Typical entity | NZ Ltd. NZBN and Companies Office records are accepted with certification. |
| Watch for | Claiming Australian GST in the NZ return, or NZ GST in the Australian BAS. Neither works; the two systems do not talk. |
