Self-employed & startups
Sole traders, self-employed and first-time founders: start right, grow ready.
Your first business deserves better than guesswork. We set up the registrations, keep the first years simple and cheap, and tell you exactly when it’s time to restructure — because today’s sole trader is next year’s company.
Sound familiar?
The problems we solve every week.
The setup fog
ABN, GST, business name, insurance, software — the first fortnight of a business is forms. We do them in one pass, correctly.
The first tax bill shock
No employer withholding means the first year’s tax arrives as a lump — then PAYG instalments start. We forecast it so nothing surprises you.
Deductions half-claimed
Home office, vehicle, phone, tools, software subscriptions — the everyday deductions are where sole traders leave money behind.
Outgrowing the structure silently
There’s a profit level where a sole trader is overpaying tax and under-protected. Most people sail past it unaware. We watch for it.

Plain answers
First businesses generate a hundred small questions. One business day, every answer.
Common questions
Asked by self-employed & startups, answered plainly.
Do I need to register for GST?
Once your turnover reaches A$75,000 over 12 months, you may be required to register. Below that it’s optional — sometimes worthwhile for the credits, sometimes just admin. Two minutes with our GST checker gives you a straight answer.
When should I switch from sole trader to a company?
When the tax saved and the protection gained outweigh the running costs — for many businesses that conversation starts somewhere around sustained profits in the high five figures, but it depends on your income mix and risk. We’ll tell you when your numbers get close.
What can I claim working from home?
A home office claim via the fixed-rate or actual-cost method, plus the business share of phone, internet and equipment. The right method depends on your setup — we’ll pick the one that pays more and document it properly.
