Common questions

When do I have to register for GST?

Registration may be required once your GST turnover reaches A$75,000 in a 12-month period (A$150,000 for not-for-profits). Taxi, ride-sourcing and limousine drivers must register regardless of turnover. You can also register voluntarily below the threshold, which can make sense if you incur significant GST on purchases.

What happens if I register late?

The ATO can backdate your registration to the date you were required to register, which means you may owe GST on sales already made — often on money you never collected from customers. Late registration is one of the more expensive mistakes in small business, because the liability is calculated as though you had been charging GST all along.

Should I choose cash or accruals accounting for GST?

Cash accounting means you account for GST when money actually moves, which usually helps cash flow and is available to most small businesses. Accruals means you account for it when you invoice. The right answer depends on how you invoice and how quickly you get paid — it is worth deciding deliberately rather than accepting the default.

Do I need an ABN if I only have a side business?

If you are carrying on an enterprise, you may need an ABN regardless of size — and without one, businesses paying you may be required to withhold 47% from your payments. A hobby is different from an enterprise, and the distinction turns on your actual activity rather than on how much you earn.
