Do I Need an ABN for TikTok Shop Australia? (2026)
Part of the guide: Do I need to register?

TikTok Shop is not open in Australia as at 2 November 2026, so there is no Australian seller sign-up and no ABN requirement of TikTok’s to meet. Whether you need an ABN today depends on something else: whether you are in business selling online through any channel, which is the same test the ATO applies to Etsy, eBay and your own website.
That also makes this a cheap question to get right. There is nothing to register for and nothing to pay for. What matters is the ABN and GST position of the selling you actually do, and knowing which parts of it would change if TikTok ever opens here.
| TikTok Shop and the ABN in one line | |
|---|---|
| Is it open in Australia? | No. Australia is not on TikTok Shop’s seller region list at 2 November 2026 |
| Launch date | None announced. A report of Q1 2027 is unconfirmed |
| Does TikTok ask for an ABN? | There are no Australian seller terms to ask for one |
| Do you need an ABN at all? | Yes if you are in business selling online, through any channel |
| Getting one “ready” for launch | Waiting is not a business, and not everyone is entitled |
| TikTok as an ad for your own store | Not a marketplace. The GST on those sales is yours |
| If it opens: low-value parcels from overseas | On the general rules the platform would generally handle the GST |
| If it opens: stock in Australia | The seller’s own sale. An ABN and standard GST registration may follow |
| GST | May be required at A$75,000 of turnover, within 21 days, ABN first |
(General information for FY 2026–27, not tax advice for your circumstances. TikTok’s seller pages, ATO pages and ABR pages were read on 2 November 2026. TikTok’s position can change quickly, so check its seller site before you act.)
1. Is TikTok Shop open in Australia?
No. At 2 November 2026 TikTok Shop’s own seller site offers the US, Mexico, Brazil, seven Asian markets and nine European ones, and Australia is not among them. TikTok has announced no launch date, and the only recent report of one is unconfirmed.
We went to TikTok’s own pages first, because this is a question where blogs disagree and some are simply wrong. Here is what the evidence looks like, strongest first.
| Source | What it says | How much weight |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok Shop seller site, region list (read 2 Nov 2026) | United States, Mexico, Brazil; Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan; Germany, France, Spain, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Netherlands, Belgium, United Kingdom. No Australia | Primary. This is where a seller would sign up |
| TikTok Shop Global Selling site (read 2 Nov 2026) | The markets it supports for cross-border sellers are the US, UK, EU, Mexico, Japan and Southeast Asia. No Australia | Primary |
| Amy Bradshaw, TikTok’s GM of Global Business Solutions for ANZ, quoted by Marketing-Interactive, 17 March 2026 | “I am not aware of any plans to launch TikTok Shop in Australia” | On the record, but nearly eight months old |
| Ebrun, trade press, 11 August 2026 | Unnamed sources expect launches in Saudi Arabia, South Korea and Australia in Q1 2027 | Unconfirmed. EcomCrew’s follow-up notes no confirmation from TikTok or ByteDance |
You will also find sites saying TikTok Shop launched in Australia in 2025, and guides describing how to register “with your ABN”. TikTok’s own seller site doesn’t support either claim. If that changes, the region list is where it should show first, so check there before you pay anyone for a set-up.
2. Do I need an ABN for TikTok Shop Australia?
Not for TikTok Shop, because there is no Australian shop to open and TikTok has published no Australian seller requirements. You need an ABN if you are in business, and the ATO’s guide for online sellers says so regardless of the platform. Until then, the ABR says plainly that “not everyone is entitled to an ABN”.
No Australian law makes an ABN a condition of listing on a marketplace, a point our articles on selling on Amazon and selling on Etsy both make. What decides it is your activity. The ATO’s guide Are you in the business of online selling? (updated 6 October 2026) sorts sellers into three boxes, and it names social media platforms alongside marketplaces and your own website as places a storefront can sit.
| What you’re doing | Declare the money? | ABN and GST? |
|---|---|---|
| A business. Commercial in character, for profit, regular, organised | Yes | Register for an ABN; GST if turnover may reach A$75,000 |
| An income-producing side hustle that isn’t a business. The ATO’s example: a teacher reselling op-shop finds for about A$4,000 profit a year, with no plan or advertising | Generally yes. “Not being in business” does not make it tax-free | The ATO says ABN and GST registration don’t apply |
| A hobby, or casual sale of unwanted things | Generally no, and related costs aren’t deductible | No |
Waiting for a launch is not a business
The ATO is direct on this: “wanting to be in business is not enough”. A business starts when you have “moved beyond planning and begin actively online selling with the intention of earning income.” Its example is Shae, who spent a year researching, planning and saving, and whose business started only when she began actively selling.
That matters because the ABR’s test is about real activity. You’re entitled to an ABN if you are carrying on or starting an enterprise in Australia, making supplies connected with Australia’s indirect tax zone, or a Corporations Act company. It warns that “you may face prosecution or criminal charges if you apply for an ABN, register for GST and claim GST refunds when you’re not entitled”, and that you may be asked for evidence that you commenced, or took steps to commence, from the start date you gave.
Starting an enterprise can count. The ABR lists commencement activities such as advertising, setting up a business social media account or website, and buying stock, and if you’re really doing those things for a business, you may already be entitled. Sitting on an idea until TikTok opens isn’t that. An ABN you can’t explain is not a precaution.
Would TikTok ask for an ABN if it opened here?
Probably, but that is an expectation and not a rule. In the markets it does serve, TikTok’s seller site says you enter your personal or business information, choose a business type and submit documents, so we would expect an Australian version to ask for Australian business details. Nothing has been published, and we won’t guess the terms. Any page quoting “TikTok Shop Australia’s ABN requirements” today is describing something that doesn’t exist yet.
3. Can an Australian seller use TikTok Shop overseas, and does an ABN help?
An ABN won’t open an overseas TikTok Shop. TikTok’s help page says “You must reside in the country you choose for your shop”, and practitioners report that US and UK shops need a local entity and local stock. Your ABN answers the Australian tax question about that business, not TikTok’s question about the overseas market.
Australian brands do sell this way. Bradshaw told Marketing-Interactive that almost 20 Australian brands were using TikTok Shop to reach beyond Australia. But one Australian ecommerce guide, current to August 2026, puts it bluntly: you can’t sell into the US store from an Australian ABN, and it describes a US entity with an EIN, or a UK limited company with VAT registration, each with local stock. Those are third-party descriptions, so confirm the requirements on TikTok’s page for the market you want.
A resident selling this way still has an Australian tax position. The main points:
| What you do | Australian GST | Australian income tax |
|---|---|---|
| Stock in a US or UK warehouse, sold to buyers there | Sales not connected with Australia, which the ATO excludes from GST turnover | Foreign income still goes in a resident’s tax return, and the ATO lists it |
| Goods posted from Australia to overseas buyers | Generally GST-free if exported within 60 days of payment or invoice, whichever comes first | Assessable in the same way |
Two cautions. A foreign company owned and run from Australia raises Australian residency questions of its own, so get advice before forming one. And US sales tax and UK VAT are their own subjects, outside this article.
4. If TikTok Shop launches here, who would handle the GST?
TikTok has published no Australian GST terms, so nobody can say for certain. But the ATO’s rules for marketplaces already exist: an operator is generally responsible for GST on imported goods of A$1,000 or less sold to consumers through its platform, and goods already in Australia when sold are the seller’s own responsibility.
If TikTok Shop opened with an in-app checkout, those rules are the natural starting point. This table applies them to the patterns you’d expect. Treat it as the general law, not as a statement of what TikTok would do.
| Pattern | Who generally accounts for the GST | ABN position |
|---|---|---|
| Overseas seller, parcels of A$1,000 or less sent direct to consumers | The marketplace operator, where it’s registered or required to be | “These sales don’t count towards your GST turnover”, so no ABN for them |
| Consignment over A$1,000 | Collected at the border from the importer | Depends on who the importer is |
| Overseas seller, stock already in Australia | The seller. The ATO’s example is explicit that the platform “is not treated as the supplier” | Entitled through supplies connected with Australia; standard GST registration; simplified isn’t available; import GST becomes a credit |
| Australian seller, physical goods | The seller | ABN once in business; GST may apply at A$75,000 |
The third row is the one to plan around. An overseas seller with stock in a warehouse here qualifies through supplies connected with Australia, and that is a different ground from carrying on an enterprise in Australia. Our guide to low value imported goods and our article on getting an ABN as a non-resident cover the detail. Income tax is a separate question again, and a warehouse used to store and deliver your own goods rarely creates a permanent establishment.
The position today is different
Right now TikTok can only be an advertising channel for Australian sales, and that changes the answer. The ATO says a service isn’t an electronic distribution platform if it only “advertises your products, such as giving a link for customers to buy goods from your website. You are responsible for GST on these sales.”
So Lin, a Shenzhen seller shipping A$30 phone cases direct to Australian buyers from her own site, gets no marketplace cover from her TikTok videos, however many sales they drive. If those sales may reach A$75,000 she may need to register, and simplified registration is available without an ABN while she only sells low value imported goods to consumers. Once she warehouses stock here, that option goes.
5. What should sellers do while it isn’t open?
Work from the selling you actually do. Sort yourself into the ATO’s three boxes, get the free ABN if you’re in business, check your 12-month turnover each month against A$75,000, and don’t move stock or pay for set-ups on the strength of a launch TikTok hasn’t announced.
Tess is our illustration. She sells A$49 sand-free beach mats from Geelong. A video of hers takes off, the comments ask where to buy, and she finds there’s no TikTok Shop to open. She doesn’t wait. She buys 300 mats, builds a simple store, lists them, advertises with her videos and keeps records.
- Her business starts when she starts actively selling. That’s the date on her ABN, and the application is free. Earlier videos about an idea wouldn’t have been enough.
- She tracks turnover monthly, as the ATO suggests. Four months in, with summer orders running, her projected turnover (this month plus the next 11) is A$80,000. That’s over the line, so she may need to register for GST within 21 days.
- She prices it before it hits. One-eleventh of A$49 is A$4.45 a mat, about A$7,273 on A$80,000, less the GST credits on her costs. She can decide now whether prices move.
- She keeps sales by channel. The ATO asks for records to be kept for at least five years, and if a marketplace ever arrives, she will need to tell its sales from her own store’s.
Lin’s question is about timing. Should she ship a pallet to Melbourne ahead of a rumoured launch? On current evidence, not for TikTok. If she has other reasons to hold stock here, the ABN and standard registration need to be lined up before the goods land, because the import GST is only recoverable through the right registration.
Where it’s worth getting help
The ABN itself is free, and a clear-cut Australian sole trader can apply online. The hard parts are the judgment calls, and those are what a registered tax agent is for.
- Which box are you in, and from when? The start date is a statement you may have to evidence, and the first return has to pick up income from the same date.
- GST timing. The projected test catches sellers before their bank balance does, and a late registration can mean GST owed on prices that never included it.
- Overseas sellers applying for an ABN. The ABR wants a statement of your Australian activities, certified identity documents and a cover sheet by post, with a 43-day window where no TFN is supplied. In our experience, this is where applications stall for weeks or months in a loop of fixing and resubmitting. An experienced agent’s job is to make it boring: documents right the first time, the application through review once, and ABN and GST in place while you run the business.
- Registration type. Picking simplified or standard wrongly tends to surface only when import GST turns out not to be claimable.
If you’d like that looked at properly, our initial assessment form scopes it in about twelve questions, with no meeting needed. Overseas sellers who already know they need the ABN can go straight to our ABN application page.
FY 2026–27. General information, not tax advice for your circumstances. TikTok Shop’s status is as shown on TikTok’s seller pages at 2 November 2026 and may change at any time; TikTok has published no Australian seller terms, so section 4 applies the ATO’s general rules and isn’t a statement of how TikTok would operate here. Tess and Lin are illustrations. ATO and ABR settings are as published at 2 November 2026. The A$75,000 GST registration turnover threshold is not indexed; confirm the current figure.
Common questions
Is TikTok Shop available in Australia?
No, not at 2 November 2026. TikTok Shop's own seller site lists the US, Mexico, Brazil, seven Asian markets and nine European ones, and Australia is not among them. TikTok has announced no launch date. A trade report of Q1 2027 relies on unnamed sources and TikTok has not confirmed it.
Do I need an ABN for TikTok Shop Australia?
Not for TikTok Shop, because there is no Australian store to open and TikTok has published no Australian seller requirements. You need an ABN if you are in business selling online through any channel. The ATO says an income-producing side hustle that is not a business is declared but does not need an ABN or GST registration.
Should I get an ABN now to be ready for TikTok Shop?
Only if you are really in business or starting one. The ATO says wanting to be in business is not enough, and the ABR says not everyone is entitled to an ABN. Real commencement activity, such as buying stock or setting up a business store, may qualify. Waiting for a platform to open does not.
Can I open a US or UK TikTok Shop with an Australian ABN?
An ABN will not do that. TikTok's help page says you must reside in the country you choose for your shop, and third-party guides describe a local entity and local stock for the US and UK. Australian residents still declare the foreign income in their tax return.
If TikTok Shop launches in Australia, who pays the GST?
TikTok has published no Australian GST terms. Under the ATO's existing rules, a marketplace operator is generally responsible for imported goods of A$1,000 or less sold to consumers, and goods already in Australia when sold are the seller's own responsibility. Overseas sellers with stock here qualify for an ABN through supplies connected with Australia.
Does TikTok collect GST on sales I make through my own store?
No. The ATO says a service is not an electronic distribution platform if it only advertises your products and links customers to your website, so you are responsible for the GST on those sales. Registration may be required once your turnover reaches A$75,000.
